Isles visited webThe area where a day field trip is being planned for the June 2016 STAR meeting is world renowned for its breathtaking beauty, having many interesting combinations of sun, surf and secret coves. These of course overlay an interesting geological story which will be explored by STAR conference participants who book to take the trip.

The details and logistics are being worked out as we write.

This is an area that would be familiar to the island nationals who were students of the Earth Science and Marine Geology Courses that were offered by SOPAC in conjunction with the Victoria University of Wellington in the late 80s/early 90s, as the subject area of course field trips.

Bluelagooncave

TuiDrola islet The black rocky outcrops against clear blue skies, magnificent caves and long, white sandy beaches that fringe waters colored every variation of azure blue were made famous by the movie Blue Lagoon, that was first filmed in the area in the late 40's; and a remake of which was filmed in the late 70's at a different location in the same area.

While the organisers are hoping to make it a one-of-a-kind day trip; it will be more to do with the magical quality of this location rather than any special abilities of the organising committee.

The details of the day trip are expected to be firmed up and costed in time for release to network members and June 2016 conference participants in the Second Circular, some time in February 2016.
